Viewing Images On Your Monitor

A wide variety of computer monitors, from small laptop screens to color calibrated professional LCDs and CRTs, tend to display colors somewhat differently. For this reason, the colors you see on your screen will differ somewhat from another computer or, for that matter, from a framed print. While these images were created using a calibrated monitor (6500K, gamma 2.2), they were adjusted slightly to compensate for "average" viewing conditions. For the small percentage of viewers that have calibrated monitors, the images will appear slighlty dark, contrasty and saturated.

As a general rule, the factory default settings for CRT monitors are too bright and blue. LCD monitors suffer the same fate and add too much contrast into the equation. This is the work of marketing departments that know the brightest bulb on the shelf sells first. To get a rough approximation of a calibrated CRT monitor, try turning your monitor's contrast level close to maximum, the brightness level near the mid point, and the color to 6500K. For LCD monitors, reduce the contrast (white point) to about 25%, set the brightness (black point) to about 75%, and set the color temperature to 6500K. These suggestions are, of course, rough approximations based on industry averages. The goal, however, is that all the individual patches of the gray scale below (20 in total) should be discernable. Some additional tweaking of the brightness and contrast settings may be needed.

For a further discussion of how cameras, monitors, printers and eyes relate, follow this link to the Articles section of the website.

While this is only an approximation, the warmer, darker screen these settings create is closer to a printing industry standard than typical default monitor settings. And it is much closer to what we see outdoors than the blue whites most people are acustomed to on screen. If your monitor looks different now, try taking another look at the galleries.

Mac users that have not adopted the gamma 2.2 PC standard will find the images to be somewhat bright and washed out. This is true, incidently, of most images on the web, as most are produced for the gamma 2.2 standard. If you are viewing this site on a Mac and have never changed your monitor settings, your gamma is likely to be 1.8, meaning the midtones will be brighter relative to the light and dark regions. While accurately adjusting a monitor's gamma requires a software utility, lowering the brightness level and increasing the contrast will help Mac users see web images the way most designers intended.

Print Care

Limited edition prints are created using the finest available materials and state of the art technology. The pigments and papers used to produce the vivid tones in your print are extremely stable and can retain their richness for a lifetime.

Display conditions, however, will effect print longevity. Two simple precautions will help maximize the life of the print: Always display and store the print behind glass or acrylic. And avoid hanging the print in a location that gets much direct sun.

Prints that are ordered framed ship with optical grade acrylic as opposed to glass. This avoids possible damage during shipping and is safer to hang in the home. To clean the surface, you may use any window cleaner and a soft cotton cloth. Do not use paper products for cleaning acrylic.
