Beckwith Mountains - Gunnison National Forest, Colorado
Waves of autumn aspen wash onto the snowy shores of Colorado’s Beckwith mountains. Culminating at the 12,432-foot summit of East Beckwith Mountain, the alpine ridge forms the northern boundary of the West Elk Wilderness. Below tree line, an ocean of aspen splashes a mosaic of color across the valley. Aspen often spread by sending up saplings from shallow roots, creating groves of genetically identical trees called clones. In autumn, clones turn color and loose their leaves all at once, painting a genetic map on the landscape.
