Frosted Aspen - Lumpy Ridge, Colorado
Early winter’s frost sprinkles the vibrant leaves of an autumn aspen. Growing amidst the rounded granite forms of Lumpy Ridge, this youthful aspen is part of a diverse, montane forest. Here one finds a delightful ensemble of aspen, ponderosa, spruce, choke cherry and wild currants among scattered dollops of granite. The unusual granite shapes were formed through a process called exfoliation, whereby water seeps into thin cracks, cleaving off layers of granite. These layers, in turn, weather into imaginative sculptures.
