Scalloped Sandstone - Parunuweap Canyon, Utah
A murky soup of sediment flows through the scalloped sandstone of Mineral Gulch, a narrow tributary of Utah’s Parunuweap Canyon. The relentless force of water through sedimentary rock carves the vertical landscape of slot canyons. Ages of trickling streams carry away tiny fragments, while the power of periodic floods gouge pockets into stone. About half of Parunuweap Canyon and its tributaries lie within Zion National Park. The remaining sections of the canyon system are largely contained within a 30,800-acre Wilderness Study Area.
