The Black Box - San Rafael Swell, Utah
The San Rafael River carves a serpentine corridor through a rainbow of sandstone strata. This narrow section of canyon, known as the Black Box, is a forbidding gorge of deep pools and icy shadows. The canyon and surrounding landscape are part of the San Rafael Swell, a 1500 square mile uplift of sedimentary rock eroded into countless forms. The “Swell” was first proposed for national park status early last century, yet still remains without congressional protection.
