Watercress - Parunuweap Canyon, Utah
A bouquet of watercress garnishes the diagonal sandstone strata above the banks of the Virgin River. The drip of a seeping spring provides year around moisture for this riparian plant. Hewn of Navajo Sandstone, the canyon was named by John Wesley Powell after the Paiute Indian word meaning “roaring water canyon.” Roughly half the canyon lies within Zion National Park. An additional 30,800-acre section is currently managed as a Wilderness Study Area.
