Coyote Cascade - Escalante, Utah
A delicate veil of water cascades over layers of time in the hidden depths of Coyote Gulch. This desert oasis was home to the Fremont culture beginning about A.D. 500. The perennial stream provided water for irrigating fields of corn, beans and squash for more than 700 years. Today, scattered archeological sites jewel a serpentine canyon sliced into Navajo and Wingate sandstone. Coyote Gulch is protected within the 1.7 million acre Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
