Aspen Symphony - White River National Forest, Colorado
The chalk white trunks of Quaking Aspen rise from a chorus of autumn foliage. Aspen get their birch like appearance from a white powder they produce to provide ultraviolet protection for the green, photosynthetic bark. Native Americans, in times past, used the white powder for sunscreen. A fast growing, soft wood tree, aspen have limited commercial value, yet are threatened by gas exploration in roadless areas of the White River National Forest.
