Towering walls of Wingate Sandstone flood with color as dawn rises over the San Rafael Swell. This magical area in eastern Utah is a part of the simmering conflict between different land use agendas. Of the Swell's 1.8 million acres, only small fragments are recommended for Wilderness designation and none of it is protected for future generations.
