Flames of an autumn sunset brush across an indigo desert sky. The dance of light drifts over the silhouette of an unnamed canyon rim in a remote corner of the San Rafael Swell. An enchanting landscape, the Swell is laced with canyons and bounded by the San Rafael Reef, a dramatic barrier of petrified dunes from an ancient seabed. Less than 7% of the 1.8 million acre area is recommended for wilderness designation and none has been protected for future generations.
