From the crevassed slopes of Mount Baker to the shining summit of Mount Rainier stretches over a 100 miles of the Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Forest. The forest, here beneath a blanket of clouds, is a diverse area dotted with parcels of exemplary wilderness and the scars of clear cutting. Near the northern end of the National Forest lies the Mount Baker Wilderness, a 177,528 acre parcel designated by Congress in 1984. The wilderness boundary has a wedge shaped incursion on the south, allowing motorized vehicles access to Mt. Baker's summit.
