The serrated ridges of Montana’s Spanish Peaks gnaw at the soft underbelly of a flaming sky. Punctuating the northern end of the Madison Range, the peaks are a rugged protrusion of gneiss and schist that comprise some of the oldest exposed rock on earth. Sections of the Madison Range lie within the 254,944-acre Lee Metcalf Wilderness. The area, designated Wilderness in 1983, consists of four separate units that provide continuity to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
