Buckskin Passage
Buckskin Gulch
Utah

Waves of Navajo sandstone twist through shadows and sunlight in the depths of Buckskin Gulch. A sinuous slot canyon within the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, the gulch averages less than twenty feet wide for more than twelve miles. It is a committing and, at times, dangerous hike. The pictured log, wedged some twenty feet above the canyon floor, was deposited by a flash flood.
