A single conifer interrupts the smooth contours of winter along the folds of a snow-draped stream. Near the thermal springs of Shoshone Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park, streams flow year-round. The park’s more than two million acres contain over 75% of the world’s geysers. Recognized early as a natural resource for future generations, Yellowstone was designated in 1872 and became the world’s first national park.
