Nature photography, as much in life, is about the journey not the destination. Discovering unique vantage points and spectacular plays of light often entails a lot of time and energy getting to a location. And yet, as often as not, either the best vantage point is inaccessible or upon arrival things aren't quite what was imagined. The photo above was taken during an "unsuccessful" attempt on the east side of Mount Baker. With steep, heavily crevassed terrain ahead and ominous clouds boiling up the mountainside, my wife and I abandoned our climb in favor of a sunrise photo session. Two photos from that morning, Mount Rainier Ablaze At Dawn and Mount Shuksan Sunrise, appear in the galleries. So often the creative moments arise precisely when we suspend our expectations and settle into what presents itself.
